Coeliac disease and genetics
« on: November 02, 2017, 11:40:58 pm »
A comment on a facebook group led me to wonder if there's any difference in incidence of coeliac disease between different races - and I'm trying hard not to sound racist, I'm just wondering, we do have very slightly different genetics, eg many Japanese don't cope well with alcohol, many Chinese don't handle milk too well, etc.
The comment was from somebody called Sandeep, so I can guess that though he was probably born in Bolton, he can trace his ancestry back to the Indian subcontinent. Almost all my close acquaintances are white and mostly British, and though at the various Free From shows you see a mix of people, it does look overwhelmingly white.
What's the global incidence? 1% or 2% - I forget. Does it vary by "race"? Or is it universal? Just wondering.
